I purchased an apartment last year and  I am using Iberdrola for my  electricity. Bills have been anything from €45 to €75 per month

It been just over a year now since purchase and my last bill was €128 !!

Do iberdrola increase to a much higher rate after the first 12 months... can i change my rate ? ... or am I now locked into a fixed higher rate for a further 12 months ?

First do a search of the forum - the topic has been extensively covered.

Spend some time on Iberdrola's website, which you can turn into English, and look at the various plans and their prices.

For the majority of residents, Plan Noche (Night Plan) is the cheapest.

You can change contracts by going to one of Iberdrola's agents, but it's easier to register for online access and then you can change it yourself.

Thanks Jim

Do you think I will be able to swap tariffs straight away or might I be stuck with a further 12 month tie-in  at the higher rate ?

I havent been over for 2 months and so not seen the correspondance.

It depends what plan you're on at the moment. You can't switch between the winter and summer plan whenever you want, but all the others say:

If the ...Plan does not fit your lifestyle, you can switch to another Plan at any time.

Also look at what capacity (power rating) you're on. If you're on 5.75 kW, it might be feasible to reduce costs by switching to a lower capacity.

Iberdrola have a power calculator to try and help you decide what power rating you need:

https://www.iberdrola.es/home/efficiency/saving/power-calculator

Mind you, it's not that clever, and tends to over-estimate what you need. In my opinion, it's best to consider the maximum number of appliances you're likely to have on at any time, and work out what power that will consume. We're in a three bedroom house with two electric ovens and hob, three aircons, washer, dishwasher, dryer, deep-fat fryer, kettle etc. We're on the 5.75 kW capacity and have only once tripped the smart meter.
