Have had a new electric Ariston water heater installed is it more cost effective to leave on while here, or to switch on and off as needed Cheers Carl 420
We use a timer. On for 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening and we have hot wate all day and night. Just a time plug and not a fancy one built in to the boiler.

Depends what you mean "while we're here".
A water heater will stay hot for a fair while, but it'll need to keep
heating up occasionally, even for a short while, to maintain the temperature.
If you mean when you return to the UK, yes definitely turn it off.
It will save you money and cut any electrical risk.

Yer I switch it off when not here all the electric, but while here conflicting views, to switch off when water heated then use water then re heat boiler or leave while here Thanks for your help Carl420

It would depend on your usage of hot water and if you remember to turn it back on for when you need it. It is never recommended to leave it on constantly. When we are there I turn it off when I think of it! Also when cooking or using the washing machine as we have low potencia. Comedians in Ireland have built their careers on the tyranny of the cost of running the immersion heater. It has been known to induce heart attacks if found to be left on all day :)

There's a lot of variables there.
I'm really not convinced you'll be saving anything by leaving a boiler off for hours and allowing it to drop to say, 50c and then heat up to the set temperature compared to leaving it on and letting it just run, particularly with the Eco option that they all have these days.
I'm not saying anyone is wrong, because I don't know either way for a fact.
I totally agree about Immersion heaters back home in the 70's though. I well remember my mother complaining that it used to cost 50p in the meter to heat a tank so us 5 kids could all get our sunday bath, ready for school. 50p!!
But these heaters are a lot smaller. I certainly don't worry about it.

Agree. I've tried it both ways summer & winter. Not a lot of difference either way. Sensible setting thermostat usage is essential. V

Yeh. Me too! My grandma told me she used her husband's 2nd world war, Armoured Regiment great-coat & used it outside as,"lagging," around the tank in the loft! I asked....
"Grandma, Did he bring a tank back as well?"

Most holiday home insurance requires you to switch off your water when you are absent - it would be dangerous to leave your boiler on if your water is off wouldn’t it?
