Haberdashery shops Hi
Hi we are moving into the area at the end of the month and my wife who is a seamstress would like to know if there are any haberdashery shops in the area or markets that sell good quality materials.
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Chris, Although not in your area, i also have spent my life ‘making’ thing with fabric. A haberdashery is called a ‘merceria’ and there is usually one in most towns
The difficulty these days is in finding good quality fabric, there is a certain amount of reasonable furnishing/upholstery fabric around, but very very little good quality ‘designer’ standard dress making fabric. I was bemoaning this to the woman who owns the local merceria who said that, like me, she remembered years ago when there was many fabric shops. She said, however, that Spanish women are very unlikely to do any dressmaking now - the younger generation mainly all go out to work, so have little time and the price of mass market clothing makes it simply not worth while - like many UK shops, they have closed.
There is one well known fabric shop in Alicante - Julian Lopez - which does appear to have some decent fabric, but most of it is very much to the Spanish taste (obviously!!!). In the area where we live, there is a huge shop in Pedreguer, Perez y Perez, which for haberdashery is actually worth a trip as they have huge amounts of everything - except Guterman thread! But their dress making fabric is not at all what I would really want to spend time making into anything and a it of it makes my heart sink unfortunately.
I haven’t seen fabric on a market for years, apart from occasionally some curtain material.

Hi, you will fine one or two haberdasheries in each town, good one I know in El Campello, opposite domti. As for fabric lots of el kilo stores in each town, not that cheap though. If you don’t mind travelling go to Creditex in Castalla, it’s huge and has everything, and haberdashery very cheap, orts playa around the back another good fabric warehouse. Or there are quite a few warehouses in Alcoy and Cocentaina. They all sell to the public. Will try and get some names for you.
