Morning. My Husband and I have just registered at our Doctors in Villena. We have been given temporary SIP cards. We still have another 4 years before we get our UK state pensions. Today my husband has made an appointment to see the doctor (extremely painful ear). They have told us we have to pay 50% of the cost. Is this right ???

They aren't obliged to give you temporary SIP cards, and are entitled to charge you 100% as private patients.

If you're residents, you should have applied for residencia, and need full cover private health insurance for this.

We have been on the gov.website and from what we can see, we have to be claiming a state pension before we can get a S1. We both have 4 and 5 years before we get our state pensions. We took our residence and the Padron, to the doctors and was given the temporary (6 month) SIP card. So should I still get a S1 also ???

You and me both. We took our Padron, residence, EHIC (runs out 2020) card with us to the Doctors, they gave us this paper SIP card which as you can see, runs out 01/19. So do I still need a S1, which states on the website we can only get one when we are claiming a state pension, which won’t happen until 2022 for my Husband. I’m really really confused 😩

You definitely won't get an S1 until you reach retirement age. Then you can register into the Spanish state health system. What FM is saying is that if you have got Residencia you would have to have taken out a private health care policy. Sounds like you might not have Residencia.

Hi Steve, we obtained residence back in 2005. Thanks for replying. We also understood that we couldn’t get a S1 until retirement age.

So why didn't you use your private health care for the treatment?

#confused!

I just want to clarify any misunderstanding for those who've not been here too long. Under the old EX-16 application process, basically all you need to get residencia was passport and padrón. The health cover and financial requirements were only introduced a few years ago.

It will be interesting to see, post-Brexit, if those of us who obtained residencia under the old system will be required to prove health cover and income.
