Hello

My wife and I are relocating to Spain after a number of years working in the Far East. We are currently in Murcia Province looking for suitable properties. Last week we viewed a nice property in Villena and are due to visit and view it again later this week. We spent a morning in Villena last week, and were impressed by the faciliities and variety of shops. The guy ib the Office of Tourism was great and very helpful too.

We are looking to live with the Spanish, in a Spanish environment, but with the knowledge that there are some expats that also live within the area/town. (at least until we become proficient in Spanish - a pipedream?)

Villena seems to tick a number of the boxes. We would appreciate hearing from expats who live in Villena (or near) with their views on life and living in the area - good, bad and ugly

I look forward to hearing from you

Peter & Margaret

Hi , we lived in Villena for the first 3 months , and although it was”ok” we felt it just didn’t tick all the boxes , and English speakers? Not many ,or at least we never mat any .we moved to Petrer , Now Petrer is totally Spanish ,and again not many English speakers , but a few ex pats here and there , though we prefer to stick with the Spanish , to be honest ....Not just nice people ...Very nice people , .I cannot praise the Spanish enough , morals , scruples , disciplined , very helpful , and much much more .And they really know how to enjoy theirselves . Petrer is a quiet town ,UNTIL , fiesta time , then it is anything but quiet . . Well worth thinking about .

We are currently selling our house ( renovated nicely ) ,and the main reason for that is, I need a large workshop ,as I make things ! And have not got the space needed .look up think Spain , town house , price 69500€ , you might or might not be interested , but even if your not , .this is a fantastic place to I’ve , And well worth considering .....also advertised on property villas , on this forum ...for 70000€ ...my names Allan , and I can give you some good advice on a lot of Spain , We lived in Blanca ( murcia , for 4 months , beautiful place , but mosquitos by the million , which is typical for Murcia . This year is the first time I ve had mosquito bites , I blame it on the floods down south , washing the wee buggers in our direction , but as said this is the first year out of 4  that I ve had them ,and a total of 10 /12 bites ,,,very worthwhile remembering this , as these nasty wee B £&**Ds can make your life a misery ...I m off to Scotland on Friday ,but if I can help , give me a shout on here as I will be keeping an eye on the site ...come and take a walk around , and you will find the most surprising choice of shops etc on your doorstep . Elda is a 15 minute walk , and has a multitude of shops cafes etc . Well worth thinking about ...Property in Elda is apparently cheaper than Petrer , but not as good to live in , that is according to my many Spanish friends , but you still have everything on your doorstep...Strongly recommended , and as mentioned we are selling ,purely for workspace ..and are currently looking for a suitable property local as We love it here, and if you are into hillwalking , 5 minutes from our house is a range of different mountains , where you can escape the hustle and bustle of life ...anyway , have a look , you’ll be pleasantly surprised , bear in mind though , you will NEED to learn Spanish if you go down the “Non ExPat “ route ....But you could make a more serious mistake , by buying in an expat area , as a lot of expats dont embrace the Spanish lifestyle , and live in little Britain ...in my eyes ....give me the Spanish people any day of the week ...much much nicer people

Good luck in your hunt

Allan

Many thanks Alan - most helpful

We are looking for a place with land so assume your place will not be for us.

Interesting about Petrer and we will consider accordingly- we have somewhat of a blank page when it comes to location but are sure that we wish to be in a Spanish environment and learn the language

Good luck with the search and move

Hi , yep no problem , but seriously consider Petrer as an Option ,,, great place to live ,and there are a few properties on sites which might suit you , . Where we are is an historical old part of Petrer ,underneath the castle ...at first glance you could be forgiven for thinking it’s a bit dirty ....NO ,the streets are cleaned regularly ,all day . The bins are emptied daily and it is not dirty ...it’s simply old ! Do your homework before making a decision , possibly rent for a few months to see if you like the area you choose .,,let your head , not your heart decide ...But my opinion ...brilliant place to live ...anyway good luck , have a nice life :-)

Hi Peter. We live in Villena and have since 2005. We love it here, the town has everything we what, great train station, not far from the airport or beaches. Totally Spanish, which is what we love about it and very friendly. If we had want English speaking people and living the English way of life in Spain we would have gone on the coast. It wasn’t what we wanted. Its more expensive living on the coast, you get more for you money living inland. You have to decided what you want from Spain. We have Spanish neighbours and friends, and English friends  and couldn’t t be happier. Good luck 😎

Thanks Anne - great information

We have taken a second look at a nice property a couple of miles from Villena town and are awaiting a bit more information before making an offer

We appointed a Spanish lawyer back in January when we were over for a week - they are not local to Villena so we would like to appoint a lawyer from the Villena area

Can anyone recommend a good English speaking lawyer in Villena or surrounding area?

Peter

Hi Peter,

There are quite a few British people living permanently in the Villena/Las Virtudes area but we are not on top of each other as most properties here on the ‘campo’ are former country farms with enough land to make your plot private. A few minutes in the car takes you to Yecla, Caudete and, of course, Villena town. Apart from supermarkets and top quality hardware shops, etc., there is a brilliant fast train service into Alicante centre with very low cost fares!

One issue you might need to think about when choosing your property is heating for the chilly winter nights. We have two wood burning stoves which so far are working well but it depends on the actual structure of your home to be able to decide what you need to heat your home. Another issue could be flies. Due to heavy rainfall, and harvest times, there are more flies than usual at the moment so fly screens on patios and windows are essential.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you need any further info.

Good luck with your choice,

Janice
