My elderly Freesat box has given up the ghost.  It's been blacking out for a few seconds now and again for a while, but today it went off and stayed off.  Even unplugging and re-plugging only brings it back for a minute or so.

I needs to be elderly because it has SCART plugs to suit my equally elderly TV.  Newer ones have HDMI..

I bought a new box a while ago but that obviously came with HDMI plugs (my mistake) .  I have now bought three digital to analogue adaptors and none of them work, so suggestions along that line will be of interest as opposed to replacing the box.

If you have one you are willing to part with together with the remote control, please drop me a line.

Thanks

Scart hasn´t been supplied on TV boxes for quite a few years.

The best option if you can find one is an old Sky box.

Another possibility is replacing your TV with one that has a satellite receiver built-in - for example, the new LG smart TVs do and have a lot of the models Freesat epg too, so you wouldn´t need a separate box.

Hi Paul, thanks for the reply.

Yes, I'm aware that SCART has not been on anything new for a while, everything I have is on SCART, so I'm reluctant to buy a new TV when the one I have works perfectly well.  I don't come from the throw-away generation. That is the reason I want a second hand one in working order.

Someone out there must have one.

I have a new Freesat box that has HDMI (my fault for buying it) which is of no use to me.  As I mentioned attempts to get an analogue to digital converter have not worked and I now have several duds in the garage.  If you know of an A-D converter that actually works please let me know.

There are some on Ebay. UK but I refuse to pay import duty imposed at some arbitrary rate that will be more then the cost of the damned box.

The current batch of Manhattan Freesat boxes, have a HDMI output, but also comes with an AV output and a AV to scart cable so can be used straight of out the box.

The old Humax Freesat boxes HDs have both HDMI and component (so all you need is a component to SCART cable from the local chinese shop.

The current Freesat "4k but not really 4k" boxes are HDMI only, and you need a HDMI to component adapter and cables for this to work (HDMI to component cables on their own do not work...you need the powered adapter to make the change from digital to analogue)

So it depends which "new Freesat box that has HDMI" you have, as two of the more popular three will work for you with little fuss...

Thanks for those suggestions.  The 'new' box is a Humax HB-1100S  which has an HDMI socket and three coloured phono plugs on the back.  Are those called 'component'?

If I understand right I can get a phono  (3 phono plugs) to Scart lead and it should work????  I might even have one of those in my box of leads.

"Are those called 'component'?" - yes

"If I understand right I can get a phono  (3 phono plugs) to Scart lead and it should work????  I might even have one of those in my box of leads." - yes

But make sure the phono to scart is phono to scart and not scart to phono... some have an "input / output" switch on the scart part to determine the required direction. Or if your TV already has the three component connections as an input, just use those instead with a compionent to component cable

Thanks once again.  I'll have a look tomorrow and let you know.

Here's an update at promised.  I got the new Freesat box all plugged in using the lead I had and got a picture and connected it to the Wi-Fi. I have not tried to connect to anything yet.

Unfortunately I got a No Signal message which is odd since the other box has been working today (on and off as it does). The new box it providing info to the set.   See attached.
I have now put the old box back and it's service as normal.

For some reason it's not finding a satellite input.  I have checked to aerial plug and it's OK as it works with the old box. The on-screen display says there is no input. Until I get a signal I can't set the postcode for the regional programmes.

I am out of ideas what to try.  Any suggestions please?

So, if this "new" box is behaving a bit like the other box, and getting intermittant or no signal then maybe the issue is not the box but a cable, connection, port on lnb or LNB issue (eg cable that gets the the sun all day gets cracked and letting in water, a connection outside that is not waterproofed, short on the connections, or you have two receivers sharing one cable via a splitter and one receiver is blocking the other as it is not on the same frequency polarisation).

It IS getting a signal, otherwise the guide would not be loading up..as the guide comes from the satellite...and that guide signal is the same signal that is used for the signal and postcode check.

No need to connect to the internet, unless you use if for youtube or netflix, as iPlayer etc will only work if you are running a vpn at router level for these uk only services.

Many thanks once again.

If the guide is loading up why can't I get it so that I can see a picture?  The two bar graphs on the signal page both show zero.

I have a multiple outlet LNB and I assume everything is OK since the old box is working well at the moment. It is not sharing anywhere.   Is there something on the new (it is new, never used) box menu that I have not found in order to tell it to connect?  The QuickStart menu does not mention anything like that so is it fair to assume it does it on its own? There were no comprehensive instructions in the box.
