I am aware that older cars in Spain display an H on the number plate but I don't know what the requirements are to get one.

In the UK your car has to be 40 years old before you do not need to go for an MoT and at that time you do not pay any more road tax.

This logic is on the basis that owners of such cars are likely to be enthusiasts and thus look after their cars better.  I think that could be open for debate though.

Please can someone advise the requirements to get an H plate in Spain and are there any perks?

Very interesting article.

It appears Spain designate an Historical Vehicle as one 30+ years old , a separate circular plate required containing the letters 'VH' ( Vehiculo Historico) ?  , plus a seperate Registration number  in addition to its normal Registration plate, provided the normal Registration number of the vehicle is still it's original one,and as I read it; a periodic ITV is still required.

Not sure about the Road Tax situation.

Many thanks everyone for the speedy and useful replies.

Even though the Spanish Historic Vehicle status cuts in 10 years earlier than the UK I can see no benefits in going for it.

You still need to go for an ITV and there is no mention I can see that says you do not have to pay road tax. So, in fact, no advantages.

I was hoping to gain some benefit from registering my faithful Jeep, but no.

As a little exercise while having a drink, I looked at:

https://www.suma.es/cuerpo_principal.xhtml?urlDirect=EI-CONTENIDO=18812--EI-PUNTPUB=241--EI-UBICACION=34--EI-PANTALLA=WEB_ORDEN--EI-APLICACION=PortalWeb--

I clicked on Consult BOP for the most recent, and the boletín that opens up says:

Se establece una bonificación del 100 % de la cuota del impuesto a favor de los titulares de vehículos de carácter histórico de acuerdo a lo establecido en el RD 1247/1995

Have you also thought about speaking to your insurance company? They might give you a reduction, especially if you agree to confining the distance driven below a certain number of kilometres a year.

Thanks Jim, I should have thought of the insurance.

I have had Classic Car insurance in the UK for years and it usually comes at around 10,000 miles a year and does work out a lot cheaper.

I don't do high mileages in the Jeep as I have another somewhat quicker motor for the longer trips.

I am loath to get rid of the Jeep as despite it's age it's totally rust free, reliable, it's hardly worth anything and it runs on LPG at just 60c/lit.  What's not to like?

Thanks for the info on the tax question. It makes it all a bit more attractive now. One has to stretch one's pension wherever possible.

You'd get a 75% discount for a vehicle that runs on gas, but I suppose you might as well settle for 100%!
