One of the best attributes of this forum is the breadth of subjects covered.

This thread started off by asking a simple question about car insurance and morphed into CGT and IHT.

The forum reflects the personal journeys of its participants, from the early stages of moving to Spain/buying or renting a home here (which, let's face it, was the easy bit), to driving, to education, to social activities, to Residencia, to healthcare, to taxation, to managing people/property/cars left in the UK, to climate-change impacts, to end-stage planning.

The participants range from wannabes, to dewy-eyed planners, to legends like Jim Taylor (and people like me who are maybe 3 years in, and feel like we're somewhere in the middle).

It all looked so simple on TV (A Place in the Sun, and the other show whose name I can't remember).

My neighbour and I discussed this a few weeks ago .... had we known then what we know now, would we have done it ?   The answer was a qualified yes.

Hi Kim, dont worry about the headaches, yes CGT is one that I believe we can get round to an extent. First, we dont plan to sell Uk residence or my sons home(he has lifetime interest in it then it goes to Cancer Research on his death. Our home in Uk that needs refurbishing before we rent it out, we wont sell until we are no longer residents in Spain. We intend returning once we can no longer drive. The only property to sell which we expect to pay CGT is the Spanish one. That,s if we were lucky to make a profit. We bought in 2006, expensive time now worth less than half not allowing for now half is illegal and we have the AVI 50ft from our door. So as this too has been bequeathed to Cancer Research as all property has been, we can afford to accept CGT on it if applicable, or not sell and wait till our deaths and leave for Cancer Research to sort it. I would still visit if able to once we return to Uk but my hubby wouldnt. As all our assets go to charities it doesnt matter what happens, so long as our savings dont get depleted.

Kind regards

Pauline.

Kelvin our answer would be an emphatic NO.

No amount of sun has been worth our struggles

Thanks for that Pete, considered, but given we have half of house now illegal and cant get it legalised and a train 50ft from front door dont think it,ll be an easy sell, would have to pay for a septic tank too, but still may not get habitation licence. Course if I accepted 50k€ I,m sure to find a buyer.

Regards

Pauline.

New subject

If you become Spanish resident you would be liable to tax on property you sell in uk.

If you have Spanish residency and live there, but want to own an English registered vehicle and and keep it in the UK for use when you go back, then you can, you will need a registered address family friends etc.. Have a look at a company called Keith Michaels they specialise in expats owning vehicles in the UK, I have not used them yet but I have been looking into it for myself. There are many non residents that own Spanish vehicles for use when they come to their properties so there’s no real difference.

Hi Gemily, unfortunately there is a massive differrence in how the 2 countries differ. It,s very easy to own and insure a vehicle in Spain as a non resident, but not so other way round. Only Uk residents are allowed to insure vehicles, which is why you have found the only one who claims to be able to do it. If you read their reviews they weren't very good, a few said they were ok but majority were disgusted with their service and I have made several contacts without replies and telephone calls that were rushed and promised call back but they didnt. At the end of the day how do they react to a problem, a claim.?No one has stated how their service was handling with such, so I,m not so sure I would trust them. My Spanish car is insured with Liberty Seguros so I will try them.

Regards

Pauline.
