Having read website they will insure vehicles in Spain and Portugal but no mention of insuring a Uk vehicle used solely in Uk. However I will email them to ask. Thankyou for your reply though

Regards

Pauline.

As I said I haven’t used them it was just a thread in reply to the question. But I’m sure there are companies out there, just a matter of looking.

Suggest you contact an insurance specialist - Mark Petrie in Denia is possibly the most experienced broker around. tel 965 781 815 , [email protected]. FYI I insure my U.K. Registered car through Mark with Liberty Seguros I am not a resident in Spain but spend several months there each year. Liberty gives me full coverage whilst in Spain plus breakdown coverage. In addition I'm covered for insurance when in U.K as well as full breakdown. I contacted Mark after exhaustive investigations suggested I could not get any UK insurance company to cover me for more than one 30day trip to Spain and the cost of breakdown cover whilst in Spain was prohibitive. MID - Motor Industry Database in U.K.  has my details (you can check your ins status on line) on record so any checks by UK police will validate my positive insurance status. The other plus to using Liberty is that anyone over 25 can drive the car if needed.

Thankyou Geoffrey for your reply but you are still a Uk resident so no problem there except the duration out of the Uk. However my question relates to becoming a Spanish resident while owning and insuring a car solely for driving in Uk and also as a spanish resident whether possible to own, drive and insure our van but to be able to bring goods over to spain on a spanish driving licence.

I may be able to give you some information though, I have just insured the van with Aviva (still as Uk resident as you are) and for extra premium on top of basic comp premium I added european breakdown with european use which allows upto 180days use in Eu per yr with breakdown and no visit out of Uk more than 90days. That fell in with our future post Brexit visits of upto 90 days perfectly. The premium was £349 but remember that was a Sprinter Van not car so maybe cheaper. I paid £200 last year just for EU breakdown on top of insurance of £212 so well worth it. My only concern using a spanish insurer is what happens when you have need and you,re in Uk. I did find a few Uk insurers that gave me upto 90days per year but only Aviva and one other could give me 180days, plus Saga but they were very expensive and no breakdown.

This is the stumbling block that could stop us going for residencia as we want to bring our own stuff over in our own van, and have the ability to drive our owned cars in the Uk while we refurbish our home.

Thanks and regards

Pauline.

Hi

We are residents in Spain and have a house in England, where our Son lives .

We have a car in the UK registered to my Husband, and we contacted Keith Michael or  Keith Michaels   re insurance for driving the car in the UK. Advised us to put our other Son, who has a different address , who drives our car, for social domestic and driving to and from work, as the main driver, as he does use it, and my Husband and myself as named drivers.

They needed proof of our Spanish driving licences, it was quite expensive but it solved a big problem. Emailed our Spanish driving licences.

Veey helpful.

They can be contacted by email or phone.

They are specialists for this query.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Angiebabes, its good to hear from somebody who has used Keith Michaels. We only have invalid son at differrent address but who cant drive so no other driver. I wasnt impressed with their reviews tbh, nor on 4 occassions when I contacted them. Do you mind giving me an approximate figure of your premium. I may have to consider taking spanish vehicle back and forth instead. Of course I realise ages of drivers and type of vehicle make a differrence. I have contacted a broker in Spain who sent me a reply saying they have dealt with this before so getting in touch with Liberty Seguros. I await their answer.

Kind regards

Pauline.

Thanks Pauline

Admiral were very fair with us. At the time our renewal came up, my wife had just been diagnosed with cancer. We were unsure where we would be living for the next year or so. They agreed to insure the car for the year, subject to review.

As it happens, my wife had her treatment in Spain, and we are seldom in the UK. So Admiral will probably refuse to insure us next time. Hence we will move the car to Liberty Seguros.

Re household insurance .... if you keep a home in the UK while holding Residencia in Spain.... this is problematic. We changed the insurance on our UK home to holiday home insurance. It cost a bit more, but we stayed legal.

Update ...

The insurance on our UK car is up for renewal.

My wife phoned Admiral this morning and explained that ...

- we now have Residency in Spain

- we now have Spanish driving licences

- we have retained a postal address in the UK.

Admiral were fine and renewed our insurance. Their only stipulation was that our Spanish licences displayed the dates on which we became qualified to drive in the UK (70s and 80s in our case). These dates are displayed on the back of our Spanish licences (transferred from our previous UK licences).

Kelvin thankyou for the update, butI,m stunned as I was refused as would have been out of Uk for too long a period. Just shows it depends on who you get! I may still phone them myself as I,m annoyed as my new car and home policies were dearer than their original quote. I,m now with Aviva who said they would cover us as spanish residents for sole Uk use but things may change nearer next year when they expect to get an update after Uk out of Eu.

My policies renew in November so hopefully they,ll have more info then. However we,re seeing an accountant week after next in Alicante and it all now hinges on IHT responsibilities, owning 3 houses and healthy savings. Thanks for updating though thats really interresting. Hope you are both well.

Regards

Pauline.
