I have had to submit my UK driving license to obtain the Spanish licence 2 months ago and should receive in few weeks as they did say it would be 3 months. I have Spanish residencia which we got in march .

I was hoping to go back UK for family visit September of October and to hire a car for the week or so but I have called several mainstream car rental companies you generally see at airports and each have said that although the Spanish licence is acceptable to drive in UK with your own car apparently, but it is not in any way possible to hire/rent a car in UK with a Spanish licence less than 12 months old.

I have not seen or heard this on previous discussions unless just missed it but can anyone advise if they have had similar experiences .

Thanks regards Dean

Didn't know this as like I say missed it, you have to hand over your UK plastic licence to Spanish licence authorities, they keep it until you wish to reverse it and leave Spain permanently so not sure how it can be kept unless you ask for a replacement before handing over the original but and please note any one doing this , the DVLA are possibly notified by Spain licence dept as DVLA will no longer let me go online with my original address in UK , if by chance you got stopped in UK with a UK licence still in your possession but have a Spanish one as well then I don't know if this is fraudulent/ illegal .

As regards to keeping a car as if only going back once a year for week it's cheaper to just hire rather than keep one , insurance, sorne, plus provision of were it can be kept

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but hey ho we learn by mistakes

Thank you rrudden for your reply, I am so delighted for you in having as you described 3 expensive UK cars , it does not actually help my situation giving me this knowledge but very much appreciated for the info.

Just to recap in Spain you must have a expensive car and the police don't bother you but if your in the not to well of category then your a prime candidate for arrest ??? ,  I am concerned now as I have a 12 month old Dacia duster (dusty) because it's not in as you say expensive range would I be a police target now , jolly gosh it's frightening ( henley regatta buffs would say) perhaps you may know a few of these .

Please don't patrinise the less well off  " more money than you "(Harry Enfield) they perhaps abide more by the laws in Spain than you assume .
