I have just fallen foul of one of the crazy changes that have come in.  Here is the short version.

I ordered some new glasses from a UK supplier I have used before.  This time I get a request from FedEx in Madrid asking if they are graduated or sun glasses, so I replied that they were NOT graduated nor sun glasses and included other info they wanted. They are single prescription so therefore not graduated like Varifocals or progressive lenses.

Anyway they come back to me and say I can't import graduated glasses into Spain.  I try to explain (at great length) that my glasses are NOT graduated but to no avail.

The upshot is, that  to the Spanish graduated means ANY SORT OF PRESCRIPTION GLASSES AND THUS CANNOT BE IMPORTED.

So, to save yourself a lot of hassle and cost don't try to import glasses to Spain.

Not too surprised. My brother bought an Italian gift (lightweight) through Amazon for me and I (in UK) was landed with a £40 extra bill from FedEx...blaming new post-Brexit import charges.

I hope you can get your situation sorted.

No can do, they have been sent back.  I hope to get a refund once the supplier gets them back, but I'm not holding my breath.

It's all a scam to make more money.

Hello

Good advice. I wouldn't  go to  that much trouble, my nearest Specsavers give a free eye examination, behind the eye health check & have a great range of frames etc usually ready within a week.

If you have a branch near you, give them a call, they are open

Cheers

I thought I was doing it the easy way, from my settee.  I sent my Spanish prescription which was very thorough and identified the beginnings of a cataract and I thought that was that, then this can of worms opened up.

Unfortunately the nearest Specsavers I know is in Torrevieja and I don't go there very often.  Hence the online ordering.

I am not sure it is a scam, actually. The bill was detailed and looked legit. So I paid it.

My beef currently is with Easyjet, for a much more significant sum. They changed a flight and offered money back. But they only gave 1/3rd back. I phones up, eventually gets through to a human, she says rest has been authorized...But it has not appeared on my credit card.

This is an airline I wanted to trust.

Anyway, I am sorry your situation was not sortable.

I actually think it's protectionism on the behalf of Spanish opticians.  But hey ho , there's nothing I can do about it.

It's a shame they don't know the difference between single prescription and graduated/Varifocal.  I spent nearly a day trying to educate them.  Nothing is so dumb as those that don't want to know.

I thought of sending them to the UK for someone to bring over, but that won't be happening either.

It isn't a scam or protectionism.  The UK left the EU, SM and CU and decided that it wanted to be treated as a third country by the EU.  That is why you cannot import the glasses.  Spain's definition of the glasses prescription may differ from yours, but the bottom line is that this is a direct result of actions taken by the UK, not by Spain.  Hopefully you can get a refund and find an alternative locally soon.

Just another problem of which the liars in Westminster and the other leavers did not bother to tell the gullible voters that being outside the EU would make the UK a "third country" along with all others outwith the club!

But at the risk of incurring the wrath of the original OP, please why would anyone bother to try and order prescription glasses from UK, when nearly every small Spanish town boasts at least one very highly qualified independent optician (not Specsavers, although I use them myself), all of whom are more than capable of producing prescription spectacles? And most of them have websites.............., ssorry , just curious.
