Hello all. I'm new to the forum. My husband and I are moving to spain from the uk hopefully end of may 2021. Could anyone let me know if there is a group or meet up with ex Pat's in Villena or surrounding areas as we are quite sociable and would love to meet new people and find friends. Thanks in advance Carol x

Hi Dawn and Carol too

We have had a 2nd home in the campo off Villena/Caudete Road for 14years now coming for 3mnths x2 per year. There was a ladies coffee morning at the bar in Las Virtudes on a Tuesday morning which stopped due to lockdown last year and I dont think it has been resurrected unfortunately. I only know of one lady who may start it up as another returned to Uk last March when we were last there (now in Uk waiting for restrictions to lift and our 2nd vaccine). There are no expat meetings in Villena that I know of but there is a large presence of expats in Las Virtudes (off the Yecla Road) and some also met up in the ice cream bar sitting outside on a Sunday evening, so if you go there on a Sunday after 4/5pm I, m sure you,ll find quite a few expats drinking there. Can't wait to get back, our 11th March ferry got cancelled and we haven't rebooked until we know its restriction free. I hope you both do find a meet up as when we were there last year from March (6mnths because of ferry cancellations) I really missed the coffee mornings and felt very isolated. If you get to find a meet up or maybe start one yourselves please let me know as I definitely will go too (hopefully with hubby too).

Kind regards

Pauline

Hi Pauline

It would be nice to start a small group in villena

Only rules will be no bitching, cattiness and talking about people behind there backs, and I have  come across this far to much. I think some people are put off groups because of this, I certainly am

Hi Dawn

Count me in if you start a group up, I promise no bitchiness, I know exactly what you mean. I enjoyed the coffee mornings but hubby rarely went as it was originally a ladies meeting and a lot of hubbies were younger and working so not there much.

We are in our 70,s and were going to move permanent but situations changed our decision so will have to stick to the 90 x 2 visits usually March-June, then Sept-Dec. Now we wait for clearance but since Brexit things regarding our travel have changed as we used to bring belongings for Spanish home over and now customs and charges have changed that so we actually aren't even sure how we will travel next.

Having read some older posts on Villena forum it seems people are still meeting up on Sunday afternoons covid restrictions permissable(it was posted October) so I, m not sure what your restrictions are there at present, we are in lockdown for third time and just stay in. Having said that we are not social butterflies, mainly teatotallers so wouldn't go to pubs anyway but we do miss eating out.

Our social activity in Spain was very little but we loved going to the Rastro in Salinas Sunday morning, calling at the Chinese restaurant in Sax on way back (recommend their 6.50€ menu del dia) and returning stuffed napping for afternoon in the sun. Bliss, we have very simple tastes!!

Weird to us was all the Chinese restaurants in Villena only open for takeaways but Sax restaurant open most of last year, however without rastro we felt bit far to go just for a chinese.

Please keep in touch, you can see my previous posts for any possible info by tapping on my name Paulsav and maybe that will give you some insight to our experiences.

Looking forward to meeting up when we return.

Regards

Pauline

Hi Carol,

Living in Alicante/Valencia means that at the moment we cannot cross borders but when we can, the Rastro in Caudete is a good place to go to meet other Brits.

The Rastro is run by Brits, Andy & Sue, and  stallholders and customers are British, Spanish, German, Belgians. There is an English Shop, selling a few things we miss, lol, plus the cafeteria for a full English breakfast if you wish. It’s open at weekends only, presently from 10am till 2pm, and there are all sorts of stuff on sale from second-hand furniture, clothes & other objects to bags, penknives and more, books, costume jewellery and so on. But it’s a good place to meet people.

In Sax, quite a few expats meet up at a couple of bars.

I live on the campo near the Las Virtudes area and there are a few Brit people living in my immediate vicinity. We should organise something between us!
