I am about to have some big silver birch trees cut down.  They were planted far too close to the house and the roots go under the house as we get suckers coming up all over the place including round the pool and inside the porch.

When they are gone I want to drill the stumps and put something in the holes that will be taken not just into the stump but down the roots, hopefully to kill the lot.

I would welcome some suggestions as to what would be the most effective treatment.  I know diesel will kill most things,  but may not get down the roots to reach the suckers and under the house.  We are getting cracks in the house as well which is not good.

I don't like cutting trees down, but on this occasion there is no choice. The stability of my house is more important.

Hi

If you go to a tool hire shop/depo ask if they hire a Stump Grinder so when you cut the tree or trees down

you are usually left with about 6or9 inches above ground use this machine to grind the stump level .!!!!

When that is done get somebattery acid poured over it and cover it up with a good thickness plastic bag and make sure no water or moisture gets to it .That will stop it ,but it might take a while to completly rot also any crawlers do the same with a plastic bag .

Cheers.

Many thanks, I'll look into that.

I'm not too bothered if the stumps remain where they are as I can put plants on them.  What I need to kill is it's ability to grow and feed the suckers.

I guess acid could do that.

Thanks for the reply.  The trees are very much alive and about 30ft tall which is why they have got to come down.

It's the stump, roots and suckers I'm after killing.

Go to Domti and buy a couple of large 5l bottles in the black plastic bottle at €2 each. Agua fuerte is the name, they do 2 differrent brands, the white bottle is around 18%hydrochloric acid but the black bottle is 24%, stronger, more active. Use neat and keep the holes topped up and eventually the roots will die. Obviously put plastic bag over stumps as this is highly corrosive. I have brought many bottles back to Uk as can't get anything as good here. I use as a weedkiller diluted of course.

Thanks for the replies, I like the aqua fuerte idea but I can't fathom out where the dog fits in.

Hi Mary, I thought I would reply so you knew you had dropped into the gardening department.  No problem.  It raised a smile.

Hi,

I would be very careful about trying to kill off the roots (possibly get some expert advice)

Way back when (when we lived in the U.K.) we had a couple of large trees in our back garden that we wanted removing as fairly close to the house. We were advised that by killing off the tree stumps/roots, then it could cause the opposite of subsidence, which may be called “heave”

I am no expert but hope this helps!

Regards

Paddy
