I do apologise if this has been covered , but just a quick question , basically its if you live in spain all legal everything, with residency ect , if you were to travel back to uk for holiday , family visit ect do you cover your self for holiday insurance in the same way if you were to go from uk to spain as a example were all told to make sure we get holiday insurance cover , its just that it dawned on me that if ever the worst circumstance arrived whilst in uk , accident, health ect as you no longer reside in uk and can be proven you dont live in uk , are you then prone to pay hospital bills , or if to see a doctor if ill,  which is impossible even for uk residents ,  as your not even registered anymore with any doctors ect do you expats just chance it or do you get cover for your trip , i am covered in spain for health but dont think it covers it if in uk , i am going to uk in july for wedding so it just sprung to mind that i have not heard or seen discussion on this , thank 6

If you have private medical insurance, then you may be covered. My Salus policy covers me for health insurance worldwide for trips up to 90 days.

OR check out the gov.uk website for info and  EHIC cards.

I hope you enjoy the wedding 😊

I am British.

I am fully legal (TIE, tax-payer) in Spain.

I am 62 years old, so I have PHI (DKV), not S1 healthcare.

I think my DKV healthcare provides for some overseas coverage, but not for repatriation,

I am not absolutely sure of my healthcare status in the UK, but I have annual travel insurance (UK Citizen/Spanish Resident) to provide repatriation cover (as well as healthcare cover) for EU/UK travel. It is inexpensive ... around 35 Eu/year from memory.

If you are a beneficiary of the WA then you are also entitled to an EHIC/GHIC from UK which covers you for any treatment which may become necessary during a visit to UK.

If you came to Spain Post Dec 31st. 2020 on a visa, and are not entitled to an S1, then unfortunately the EHIC is not available to you so you would need to cover yourself privately.

Regardless travel insurance is of course always advisable.

Getting treatment in the UK

Because the NHS is a residency-based system, under NHS rules UK nationals who move abroad on a permanent basis may lose their entitlement to free NHS healthcare.

If you are a UK national and move to the EU, you should not expect to be able to use NHS services for free when visiting the UK unless you have an EHIC, PRC or S2 to show your healthcare costs are funded by the EU country in which you now live, or another exemption applies.

Some former UK residents do not have to pay for NHS treatment when visiting England. This includes:

  • UK war pensioners
  • UK government employees
  • UK nationals living in the EU on or before 31 December 2020, once they have a registered, UK-issued S1

Read more about using the NHS when you no longer live in the UK (see ‘UK nationals who no longer live in the UK’ in Healthcare for visitors to the UK from the EU).

If you return to live in the UK you’ll be able to use the NHS like any other UK resident.

Read more about using the NHS when you return to live in the UK.

If you have a S1 form you are covered for medical in the UK.

I called overseas healthcare Newcastle on 0044 1912181999, and they confirmed that I was covfor health in the UK.

That's exactly what my previous post explains.

I am currently applying for the Generalitat Valenciana Convenio Especial as l find the PHI l have is expensive, although it does cover for trips abroad for up to 90 days. Where applying for the Convenio Especial you have to declare you are not entitled to any health care from the UK and supply documentation from the NHS stating this, on contacting the NHS they ask questions on how long you have permanently lived in Spain and as I am only 63 years of age and not entitled to my uk state pension until l am 66,  and not entitled to any UK benefits they then send you a letter in English and Spanish confirming the UK is not the responsible authority for your health care, which is then given to the Spanish towards your application for the Convenio Especial.
