Last week some people moved into a cottage next to  me that has no water or electricity and had been empty for years.

A couple of mornings ago I had no water coming out of my taps.  I was not too bothered because the pipe occasionally has been accidentally dug up because no one knows where it is. That is easily fixed.

On this occasion I found that my pipe had been cut and a tee piece installed right opposite the recently occupied cottage.  Water was leaking everywhere, so I went down to the meter and shut the valve. How long it had been running I have no idea, but it will show on my next bill.  It was obvious they were intending to connect their house to my supply.  There are no other properties nearby.

I have removed the offending tee piece and left the supply shut off.  Luckily I have tanks at the house to keep me going.  I will repair the cut pipe next week.

This is not the first time I have heard of pipes being illegally cut to enable theft of water.

If you suddenly loose your water supply please bear this in mind. Find out where your pipes run and walk down the line.

I thought about this, but at this stage I decided not to, but I have informed my solicitor asking him to fire a warning shot to the owners.

If it happens again then that is what we will do, together with a Denuncia.

I did not actually see the people messing with the pipe so I have no proof as to who actually did it, even though it's pretty obvious.

I am repairing the pipe tomorrow as I need to get the water back on and the dishwasher is full!!!

The water company was around Torrevieja area replacing the water meters, to new smart meters. I know that some people were left with water leak after the installation of the new meters.

No different to the UK then.  Many people suffered as a result of incompetent untrained 'fitters' (I use that word loosely) being sent to change people to 'smart' meters which, more often than not are anything BUT smart.

So far in the UK I have resisted all attempts to force me to change.  I will keep resisting until such a time as they become reliable and accurate.

They will try every trick in the book to get you to change, but there is no law that says you have to.  Just send them packing.

I am shocked! They must realise that whoever did this connection for them was latching onto someone else’s supply!

Keep an eye on this as they may try again!

Hi Janice.  It must have been pretty obvious that they would get caught.  They must be incredibly dumb to think they could get away with it.

There are only two pipes in the whole area, one is 75mm dia and feeds the village and then there is my smaller one, 32mm,  which is what they cut into.

I replaced the damaged section yesterday.  It was good to get a shower again.

My solicitor is writing them a warning note and I will inform Aguas Alicante.  They can't do much but it gives them a heads up.

This practice is not uncommon in Spain so I'm told.
