If you have your NIE there is no need to update it as your NIE Number is for life.

For your padron, just pop into your ayuntamiento , each one varies  some will do it there and then for you, others will give you an appointment and some an appointment has to be made on line.

You will obviously need your NIE ( which as already advised is a number for life) passport, deeds or lease and a recent utility bill.

If your grasp of Spanish isn’t that great yet, most of the staff on reception can speak  a little English, but all you need is to put “ please can I enrol on the padron”  into a translate app on your phone. It’s a fairly simple process, as the staff have all the information  they require from the documents you need to produce the padron certificate.
The only other question they may ask is the reason why you want to be enrolled on the padron, some are stricter than others, other areas are quite happy to flex the rules.

Thank you Lynn,

Did that, took paperwork, wrote down and tried my Spanish,no one spoke English,as help needed with forms as well.

Also told me to take an introducer as my Spanish not great, and did not want to get written forms wrong.

Had another reply with a contact in San Isidro, going to phone her today.

Fingers X

Heather.

Heather.

Have you had this confirmed by your ayuntamiento that they need an NIE issued in the previous three months as I’ve never heard of any such thing. But this after all is  Spain so never say never.
But checking my own NIE, there’s absolutely no date on it at all, so the authorities would not know when it was issued.

The three month “thing” is more likely to apply to your padron.

Once you’ve got a padron although it’s valid for  approximately 5 years (depending on status)  if you need to produce your padron for anything, such as obtaining residency, obtaining a SIP card, registering a vehicle etc, that’s when you need a copy padron which has been rubber stamped within the past three months, even though the original issue date remains the same.

My NIE is the old fashioned A4 piece of paper with stamp, seems modern one is a card.

Yes I know NIE is for life.

Must admit never looked at it before, did not know it had changed.

So told to get new version,as mine out of date ?

Thank for reply Lynn.

Heather.

No, the NIE hadn’t changed at all it’s still a white A4  sheet of paper and there is nothing on it to renew nor update. .

Just checked back through your previous posts and you appear to a resident as you were asking about renewing your residency in 2022?  so are you getting mixed up  and it’s actually  your residencia that  you need to  “renew/update”?  and not your NIE?    Presumably your 5 year temporary residencia had expired and you needed to exchange for a permanent residencia.    Did you not renew it in 2022?

However it could be that if you are a British passport holder you have been recommended to exchange it for a TIE  photo card.

If you are a resident you should also be on the padron and as I mentioned in an earlier post you will need a padron less than 3 months old  if you are renewing your residency . However that’s a simple procedure take your  copy padron, residencia and passport  to the ayuntamiento and it takes less than 5 minutes to update your padron, no filling out of forms required.

Nope even the NIE’s issued this year are still white A4 sheets of paper, no such thing as a  NIE card. in fact NIEs are usually issued via email

If you are a resident you don’t even require that A4 sheet of paper as your residencia or TIE has your NIE number written on it . If anyone  (official) requests to see your NIE you show them your residencia or TIE Card.
