From your question it's apparent that you're non-resident, and I assume you need a current NIE for some type of transaction.
The bad news is that the procedure is the same as for your original NIE application (EX-15 and Modelo 790), but this time you fill in the NIE number at the top of the form.
The good news (?) is that the renewal fee is €7.10 instead of €9.54.
It can be done in Spain or at a Spanish consulate in the UK.

No mention of a Modelo 790 when we got our NIE's about 3 months back.

If you intend to do it at a Spanish consulate (by far the easiest way), have a look at their website, which will have the details and forms.
If you're planning in doing it here, you can download the the application form here:
The above is a government website, but even the official websites have different variations of the form.
There's a guide to fill out the form here:
http://ankaravisa.es/archivos/EX-15%20%28Instrucciones%20en%20ingl%C3%A9s%29.pdf
I haven't got time to research it fully. You need a Modelo 790 form to pay the fee before you go to the national police station of your choice, but the online option only has the fee for a new NIE, not a renewal:
https://sede.policia.gob.es:38089/Tasa790_012/ImpresoRellenar
Hopefully someone else will help.
You'll also need your passport and a copy.
Check the website for the national police station you intend to use, as they'll probably require you to make an appointment.

Pete, if you did the NIEs yourself, you must have had a 790, as it's the payment form of which the police need a copy proving payment before they'll process the EX-15.

I was under the impression that an NIE number was a one off for life registration and didn't ever lapse?
Am I wrong?

That used to be the case, and still is for someone applying for one and ticking the Residencia box.
For someone ticking the Estancia box, the form issued has a shelf-life.
The NIE number itself last for life, but if a non-resident want to carry out some matter that requires a valid NIE, then they've got to get a renewal.

Cheers Jim. I got mine when I was non resident in 1985 and when I moved here permanently in 2016 the police just re-enacted the same number that they had on the system (based on providing the correct paperwork). So far no one has said a dicky. How would you know if it had lapsed? Or was incorrect in terms of being a non res when I am now perm res?
