I have a villa here in Spain, I am regsitered at the local soctors surgery so am covered for medical emergencies - my question is is there any point in having medical travel insurance for my frequent visits to Spain? The Insurers tell you you but what about ifyou have to be repatriated yet the numbers of expats that have been repatriated in recent years is minimal?  TIA

It's not necessary if you have sufficient funds to repatriate yourself or family, you are in effect "self insuring".

It only becomes really important if you don't have the funds to pay. You can't always rely on "Go fund me" pages.

As a non resident you only have a SIP as a convenience to avoid having to record your EHIC/GHIC details each and every time you need something. Some Saluds issue them on that basis but only for a maximum of 6 months at a time.

It does NOT mean that you are registered with or a beneficiary of the Spanish health system.

A serious illness or a need for repatriation can cost 10's of thousands which without insurance will come entirely out of your own pocket.

Curios how you know how many expats have needed repatriation "in recent years"?

I didn't think you could have a SIP unless you were a resident....

I would be doubtful if you have a SIP card if you do not live permanently in Spain and registered with the local authorities. Presuming you are a UK national the UK Government office advice and guidance for travelling to Spain is as follows:

'It’s important to take out appropriate travel insurance for your needs. A GHIC or EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance and you should have both before you travel. An EHIC or GHIC does not cover all health-related costs, for example, medical repatriation, ongoing medical treatment and non-urgent treatment. Read more about what your travel insurance should cover.'

we got the Sip because we have a padron being house owners. if you go on the UK government website it tells you how many people have been repatriated- possibly 20 a year at the most. Our Sips have to be enewed in 6 years

Being a home owner and being registered on the Padron is not sufficient to entitle anyone  to state funded heathcare in Spain. This link will provide more detailed information:

Simply being property owners does not entitle you to anything, including a SIP card and being on a 'patron'!

Furthermore SIP cards do not need periodic renewal so I don't know what it is you've got, post a photo with personal details redacted. How/where did you get it?

I don't know where the UK government get their numbers from but they can have have no clue whatsoever as to how many UK citizens have needed repatriation paid for either by their travel insurance or privately.
