Hi , my wife and I are moving to Torrevieja at the end of July on a NLV and want to know if I should inform the relevant tax office in Britain that I am  receiving my private company pension into my Barclays account (registered to an English address ) when I move to Spain or do I need to just declare it to the Spanish tax office ?

You need to complete a "Form Spain Individual" http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/gds/paye/attachments/81015_spain_indiv.pdf

The HMRC will continue to tax you on that pension and you will pay tax on it in Spain if you don't.

You may find you will pay tax in both countries until it is sorted but HMRC will give you a back payment once sorted. You also require a form from the Spanish tax authorities stating you are now a fiscal resident in Spain.

Hi , thank you for that reply that's brilliant information and very helpful . Having read the form , am I right in assuming I can't inform the British tax office of moving to Spain until I have actually registered as a resident ?

Correct. You will also not be able to complete the form until you have the statement from the Spanish tax office stating you are a fiscal resident. You will not become a fiscal resident until you have spent more than 6 months in any one calendar year in Spain and have completed your first tax return.

You say you are moving at the end of July therefore you will not be a tax resident in Spain this year. You will only become a tax resident in Spain next year (2024) and complete your first tax return by June 2025 for income received in 2024. The tax office will then have you on their books and will supply the statement.

This is, unfortunately, the way it works and you will continue paying tax in UK for the remainder of this year and all of next year but will get the amount reimbursed once you have all the correct paperwork.

When we moved over, I informed the tax office by letter but all they did was send me the Spain individual (was then called a FD9 I think) and it took me a good 3 years to get it all sorted but I did get the tax I'd paid in UK refunded.

Hi Gary 7563. I see that your Barclays account is currently registered to a UK address.  If it is a "normal" UK account, either current or savings, you will no longer be able to have it registered to a UK address if you are going to become a permanent resident in Spain. Barclays UK no longer have passporting rights within the EEA.  You would be breaking their T&Cs.  They closed all EEA residents account at the end of last year and made it perfectly clear in their correspondence that you could no longer use a "UK" address where you were no longer living as a resident.  Suggest that you open an account with HSBC UK.  They currently accept EEA residents. I have, together with so many others opened, an HSBC UK account whilst living here in Spain. I have been resident in Spain for many, many years and had been a Barclays client for well over 40 years.

Regarding HSBC, enquire re: the "new" global account. ( They may automatically suggest this). V
