Hi myself and my brother recently bought a car in spain and when insuring it it's only necessary for 1 person to get insured on it. We are never on holiday at the same time so whoever is in spain drives the car. Is there any documentation we need when the person who is not named on the insurance is driving the car. Any info would be greatfully appreciated.

Regards Jim and Damien

You should have the 'Registration papers' and the Insurance Cert. in the car with you whenever you are driving. It doesn't matter if these documents are in your brothers name, as long as they are valid. In Spain it is the vehicle that is insured, not the driver. So as long as there is a Cert. of Insurance for the car, 'any person over the age of 21 who has held a drivers licence for 2 years' can drive it. As it is the car that is insured there are no 'named drivers' like they have in the UK. If stopped by the Police you only have to show these papers and your licence.

Some claim that you need a 'permission to use' form basically to show that you haven't stolen the car and while it can do no harm in a case like yours where I presume you share a surname with your brother it's potential usefulness is somewhat diminished !

Hi Jamie,

Do you have to be 21 or 25 (as stated in Jim's guide) to drive the car? As our daughter and her boyfriend are 22 and 24 and would like to drive our car whilst out.

Hi

I have double checked my policy and it does state ''any driver over 25 that has held a drivers licence for 2 years'' is automatically included to drive at no addition cost.

My mistake, I was confused because I also have my daughter on the policy and she is only 22. You can add a younger driver to your policy as a 'named driver', but there would be an additional charge if they are under 25.

I use a company called 'Right-Move' in Quesada, they are an Insurance broker and the staff are British. They are very helpful, perhaps you could give them a call for advice. 966 716 410. They have 3 offices in Costa Blanca.

Sorry for the confusion.
