We have been told it is illegal to have an alarm siren box on the outside of a property in Spain. We can’t find a definitive answer as to the legalities of this. Surely an external sounding alarm box is more of a deterrent. We have been told the alarm can only sound indoors. Any advice would be great. Thank you.

Not sure if that's one of those urban myths or not but we have a couple of houses on our community with alarm boxes on the outside of the property and there are quite a few companies advertising fitting them on the outside.

Yes, they can be a pain when they go off (many times for no reason) and people aren't here or haven't made any arrangements for a key holder to go in and turn it off. We had one in UK that kept going off for a whole week until someone got up a ladder and smashed it with a hammer.

So, no, I doubt it's illegal but at least make sure it's not going to make you Public Enemy Number One if something goes wrong with it.

There are 4 groups of alarms that have a siren - for example, group 1 is for an alarm that is not connected to a monitored control. The town hall sets the rules. Orihuela regulations “ORDENANZA MUNICIPAL CONTRA LA CONTAMINACIÓN ACÚSTICA POR RUIDOS Y VIBRACIONES (FORMAS DE ENERGÍA) are that the siren can go off for a maximum of 5 minutes.

Yes, you can have one installed on the exterior of your property as long as it's in agreement with your town hall rules.
