Long term holidays: should I take out extended travel insurance or rely on E11 card?

Hi all. I'm in the pricess of purchasing an apartment. I'm planning to use it as my holiday home and spend about 6 months of the year in Spain. Question for all of hounding a similar position due you take out extended travel insurance or do you rely on your E11 card should you require medical assistance. I've been looking at travel insurance for long periods of time and it's quite expensive (I have annual travel insurance out have to pay the extra). Thanks in advance. Bev

You should always take out insurance as the EH11 card only covers you if you require state health insurance cover and it states you get it at a reduced cost so many treatments may not be free. I use yearly private insurance cover. Try Leisure Guard for a quote. You do not need to go into all your present ailments although any you have you wont be covered for if you take ill with these on holiday. I found them really reasonable and it was cheaper to take out yearly cover than one trip cover. If you are in good health it is one of the cheapest I have found.

New to this site so only just seen your post. Like you we want to be in Spain for 6 months a year. UK government website states that if you leave the UK for more than 3 months you are supposed to tell your uk doctor and he will remove you from the NHS! We are therefore going to Spain for 2 blocks of 3 months split by Christmas in UK. This means we can still access NHS. Staysure quoted £220 for full holiday insurance for 6 months for wife and me.

Be interested if you have solved the 6 month problem?

Hi Geoff. I've actually managed to got an Insurance in place for my full specified time 147 days in addition to my annual cover which covers me for 100 days. Not investigated NHS. I'm sure there are folk long term who don't actually take any cover snd use the Euro card for treatment. Good luck
