Sept. or Oct.? which is best month to visit?

We are looking to retire in 12 months time. La Mata looks like a great place. Never been to Spain before. We can get away from work for about 2-3 weeks in sept. Or Oct.. which would be the better month? We would like to be on or near the beach. Would you recommend a hotel or rented apartment? Any recommendations on where to stay. I know the visa going to be a hassle (South Africans). Anyone who may have been through the process, to give advice?
