Preventing damp & mould in empty holiday home

Hi. I shall be leaving my recently purchased holiday house unoccupied for much of the time. The house is very close to the beach. Whilst there are no visible signs of damp, sheets and blankets left in wardrobes by the previous owners smelt musty and had spots of mildew. I disposed of these but would like tips please on how to prevent this recurring, particularly over winter. What is the best way to store bedding and pillows? Should mattresses be left uncovered?
I have been told to switch off water and to place bicarbonate of soda down plug holes.
