I only had to provide a passport and a NIE to get a car put in my name but that may of changed now. Best thing to do is contact a firm that do it for you and enquire as to what it is you need.

Just to add, you don't need a padron. Thousands of people must have holiday homes here plus cars yet do not have a padron.

Hello Anne,

The change of ownership of a car in Spain use to be dealt at the Traffic office in Alicante (now also possible in the new Traffic office in Elche, in spanish so called DGT) if you do yourself, or through any 'Gestoria', a specialized office who will charge a small additional fee. The necessary documents to provide are a copy of your NIE and car documents and a special form from the traffic office to be completed and signed by purchaser and seller.

Please look at the traffic office link for full identification  https://sede.dgt.gob.es/Galerias/tramites-y-multas/tu-coche/cambio-titularidad/01/01-Cambio-titularidad-vehiculo-INGLES-04-04-2016.pdf .

Hope this helps. Should you need car insurance, we'd be pleased to provide you with a good quote.

Kind regards - Alfonso - Gran Alacant Insurances

Alfonso's post says nearly all that one needs to say, but I'd add that you need to go to an Agencia Tributaria office  to pay the transfer tax before you go to Tráfico.
