So with brexit looming and changes to requirements kicking in at the end of 2020 i was wondering if it was possible to rent a cheap place and open a bank accout and then apply for residency this year before it gets a lot tougher to qualify. I do travel to la zenia 3 or 4 times a year and paying for a cheap apartment for a few months wouldnt be a problem. Also i beleive money has to be transferred into a spanish account monthly axgain this would be possible . I know this is kind of cheating the system but i cant be the only one considering this.

In theory it's possible, but don't forget to factor in the cost of private health insurance, the fact that you'd be a tax resident here for next year, and the fact that your absences from Spain next year would be monitored which could lead to losing residency.

Yes the health insurance would have to be covered but as for monitoring my absence they would find that impossible with no borders in EU . Nothing stopping me flying out of another country

You'll be a non-EU citizen, so your movements will be monitored any time you go through passport control.
