Hi, I have today received email from car insurance co in Spain. We reside in UK but own a separate car in Spain. Whilst we would normally renew we have asked for quotes on 3rd part - our car is parked in a private designated space on our community. Does anyone know the rules on this. I.e do we need to renew if not driving car, whete can we leave that wont incur fines. Our key holder has now removed our battery and put in our house.

I was told it is illegal not to have insurance in Spain unless there is a temporary Baja in place. A bit like a sorn declaration in the UK, just a lot more paperwork.

I have comp on my car with a €300 excess. I inquired about going down to 3rd party and the difference in the premium was only about 10%.

PaulineD you are fortunate that your insurer sent you a text. As far as I am aware the requirement is that they inform you by mail that the insurance is about to run out. If you fail to notify them one month before the renewal date that you do not wish to renew they will renew it and force you to pay whether you have contracted with another insurance company or not. Apparently there is no way out of it and the courts will insist that you pay. I'm afraid I don't know what the situation is with non insurance of a vehicle.

Movingon, I had third party cover for my car and was charged 338 euros. After going to an agent I purchased fully comp. with windscreen cover and 200 euro excess for 282 euros. I still can't work out the reasoning in this apart from "I was ripped off".
