Sadly I was leaving for work so had no camera on me, but on my path was the biggest grasshopper-type thingy I've ever seen. 7 cm or more is no exaggeration. Light brown in colour and quite chunky. Bleedin huge. Any ideas?

It's probably a giant grasshopper, and we see quite a few in summer.

I don't know the Latin name, but they're called Egyptian grasshoppers, and do make a distinct whirring or clattering noise when they fly.
They actually seem quite placid, and I've had one on my hand when I rescued it from a spaghetti tube floating on our pool.
Got lots in my garden and can pick them up quite easy not at all harmful
