Schengen rules are stupid and will put people off unless they are dropped. I have heard that they may be dropped by the Spanish Authorities. Hope this is so for your case.
Don't spread false rumours, the Spanish Government cannot drop them Universally, these are part of the EU Schengen area and have to be enforced or the Schengen Area would be breached.
The borders between France and Portugal would be reinstated, and anyone can now see with the UK - French and Irish borders the problems these things bring.
So I have a simple message for those who hope or campaign for change, 'Dream on'.
Of course the UK could make a request to join the EU, you may have more chance with that
