Hi, we are hoping to move to Spain during 2021.  We know that we have to have private healthcare insurance - this does not cover any existing condition.  Can you advise us what are the costs like to buy medication (high blood pressure tablets) in Spain.

We also saw that after 1 year we can apply for Convenio Especial - can you tell us what this is and how much it costs monthly?  Do we also have to have the Private insurance as well?

Many thanks

Hi, you can get blood pressure tablets from the Farmacia for around €3 for a months supply.  No prescription needed.

The Convenio Especial is a part of the Spanish healthcare service which after living in Spain legally for 1 full year you can apply to join. Under 65's will cost about €60 per month, over 65's is around €157 per month. It will include any pre-existing conditions. You do not need private healthcare cover as well.

I don’t think the Convenio covers the cost of prescriptions however.
