Heard so many different things...we have a holiday home in Castalla which we use no more than 6 months a year, splitting it 3 months at a time generally...we were told that we now need a Spanish driving licence or we will be heavily fined. But looking at the forms we have to be residents, we are not.
Please would somebody be able to advise on the subject.

This has been well covered in the series of Jim's Guides here on the Forum, check the link below and scroll down to the section on Driving Licenses in Spain. These are an invaluable series of Guides on many aspects of living in Spain.
Hi whilst we are still in the EU, you need only to check with your own insurance that you are covered for abroad. Nothing else if you are only there for max 6 months . After [if !!! ] we exit, you will need an international licence from the post office in the UK - costs around £7 . There are 2 : the one for Spain lasts 12 months , the other for the rest of the EU lasts 3 years. You will also require a red card from your UK Insurance company . It's actually all very easy. Just make sure you check with your UK Insurance what 'type' of cover you have abroad. You may have FULL insurance in the UK but some companies will downgrade that to 3rd party whilst abroad but [ very crafty !! ] they will 'upgrade' the abroad cover to FULL , for, you guessed it , an extra premium !
