Hi Hubby and I wanting to retire to Spain in 2 years. We want warmth in the winter with some important UVB vitamin D! Is Denia an option? Or should we think of going 3 hours further South to Costa del Sol?Just looks like a beautiful place bringing 2 dogs also..

Denia in the winter months (Dec to March) can have some lovely warm weather and sunshine within the changeable seasonal weather. It usually get warm from around 11am until around 4.30pm and could be in the mid 20's but as soon as the sun goes down ( or goes behind buildings) the temperature drops dramatically.  Overnight temperatures can be in the low teens. Rain and wind can get annoying when it sometimes lasts a couple of days.

It will seem warmer for you at first but as you acclimatise to the weather the winter months can feel very cold and thats why you will see long time residents dressed in top coats when tourists are lounging around wearing t-shirts and shorts!!

Denia is a nice town but becomes very  quiet during winter with not a lot happening during the evenings.

The further south you go will be warmer but not necessarily drier.......

Thanks Steve for quick, informative reply. Some rain us Brits can put up with and walking dogs in those temperatures is much more appealing to me.We are going to visit for a week hire a car and drive to as many areas as possible. My dilemma is husband 10 years older (I’m 58) so time not relatively on our side.I have boys currently 20 and 15.Part of me wants to do 6 months Uk Apr-Sep 6 months Spain Oct-Mar.Will have around £330,000 cash for a property/ies .Husband happy to leave Uk full time but it’s my boys I don’t want to leave fully..20 year old got a very good engineering apprenticeship with a big oxygen/ gas supplier in Uk and his roots and girlfriend are in UK.My youngest son would probably struggle to find work in Spain…A lot for me to consider. All I know is I cannot do too many more UK winters…🥶

Interesting. You want to do 6 months at a time which you are no longer allowed to do as the maximum stay is 3 months or 90 days, You then have to leave for at least 90 days before coming back as the 90 in 180 days rule applies. Even EU passport holders are limited to 90 days stay unless they sign on the foreigners' register but if you exceed 183 days (6 months) in one year then you become tax residents and pay income tax in Spain on all world wide income and that is for everyone.

If you left full time you would need to get a visa and, if a UK citizen, prove an income of 28,800 per year and 7,200 euro for the partner and others. Your son would find it impossible to get work in Spain as he'd need a work visa which, for Brits, is virtually impossible to get without the firm offer of a job.

As your husband is probably drawing a state pension, the UK will cover him for healthcare costs and you can become his beneficiary for healthcare if you do move over permanently, If you do then you must take into account you cannot be absent from Spain for more than a combined total of 10 months in the first 5 years which is important if you want to visit family.

Hi,

I agree with marcliffs post that you can't do 6 months here in Spain without having a visa.

If you want to live here in Spain permanently you will need to apply for a visa. I have given you a link to the non lucrative visa:

https://www.exteriores.gob.es/Consulados/Manchester/en/ServiciosConsulares/Paginas/Consular/Visado-de-residencia-no-lucrativa.aspx

And here:

https://movingtospain.com/non-lucrative-visa-spain/

With this visa (NLV) you will not be allowed to work.

Your youngest son will find it almost impossible to find work here while having a UK passport.

If you choose somewhere within easy driving or public transport distance of Alicante airport you can travel back and forth between Spain and the UK very easily and cheaply with Ryanair, easyJet and Jet2 serving regional airports all over the UK.  You can then easily stay within your 90 day limit and keep in touch with family. And they can easily visit you of course.

Denia would be too far for me, so maybe look at Altea or Vilajoyosa for a similar alternative.

As both Marcliffe and Steve have said, it’s not quite that easy anymore to split your time the way you’ve described and as said virtually impossible to find employment unless you have an EU passport.

Temperature wise I confirm everything Steve has written.

You are asking at exactly the right time of year to do a bit of internet research on temperatures as we are probably in the few weeks when we have the coldest weather. OK don’t quote me on that, because after all you can’t really predict the weather.

Pick a number of places right down the coast from Denia to Marbella and keep a check on the temperatures at the moment. Look at hourly temperatures around 3 or 4 pm again around midnight and at 6am. You’ll see exactly how much the temperatures drop once the sun goes in. But location wise I wouldn’t expect there to be more than a couple of degrees different along coastal areas. Drive 30/45 minutes  inland and it’s a completely different picture.

Spanish houses aren’t designed to retain heat, so in the winter months it can actually feel much colder indoors, than a nice centrally heated, carpeted home in the UK. No wonder every other market stall sells slippers, those tiled floors are freezing! So as residents we spend most of the winter months sitting in a sunny spot outside - if you move inside you’d need at least an extra couple of layers as well as hiding under a cosy blanket.  So just be prepared winter is cold , except for those hours during the day, but it’s not the damp miserable cold that you have in the UK.  Probably the best thing about Spanish winters is that we don’t really get drizzle, when it rains in Spain it really rains.

When choosing your location, check the airport functions all year round.  Even though Alicante and Malaga are the busiest airports covering the Costa Blanca & Costa del Sol, youll find reduced flying options available in the winter months. Some of the smaller UK airports may reduce their flights to just once or twice a week which may not be convenient for you. Some smaller  airports  here virtually close during the winter. Again as mentioned try as find somewhere close to an airport. Do you really want to drive 2 hours to the nearest airport and 2 hours back  to collect friends and family in the knowledge that you have to do the same journey a couple of days later.

Just for context, driving time from Denia to Alicante airport is 1 hour. 65 miles. Could be done in slightly less if you max out the speed limits which I don't. May be too long for some but worth it to those of us who want to live in such a beautiful green landscape.

Also, Denia is a Spanish working city, it doesn't "die" in December-February, it reverts away from being heavy on tourism, but all the shops and all the non tourist reliant restaurants and bars are still open.

Very often areas in the Costa Blanca are warmer than those in the Costa del Sol.

Thanks for informative reply yes not option for younger son and unemployment quite high in Spain better to visit us for holidays.

Yes looked at pension income for both of us and we would meet that criteria.Yes would have to apply for a visa if past 3 months and  would have to be present in Spain for the 6 month threshold. Thanks
