Convenio Especial - Confirm Application Timing

Hi All...

I have read the following useful thread on applying for the Convenio Especial:

How to get Convenio Especial

One thing I wanted to confirm and understand properly is when I would be eligible to apply. I currently have private health insurance. I applied for residency at the beginning of February 2024 (recently got my TIE).

1. Is it still after 1 year of residency? The reason I ask is that my local lawyer here in Denia has told me it is 2 years.

2. Is the start of the timing from the date of residency application (so Feb 1 in my case) or when I received residency approval and my TIE?

3. Can one start any aspects of the process beforehand to maybe speed things up a little?

You can apply for the Convenio Especial after living in Spain legally for one full year. So that would be one year after you had gained your TIE.

It is one full year after registering on the Padron or obtaining residency, whichever comes first. You need to provide proof.

You cannot apply in advance. When my partner and i applied we had to attend the INSS office in Alicante to sign the documentation. It takes about 4 weeks for the whole process.
