Shooting them is not the answer!   They should be reported to your local town hall.   I believe that the best way to destroy them is to burn them.

I have dealt with the low nests but the high ones I cannot get to. Last year he came and shot the high nests and the poison kills them, it works

Hi after living in a pine forest for many years with two dogs to protect, I found that even an air-rifle pellet (or 3) putting a hole through the nest seems to stop the descent. ( A Spanish local explained that a hole in the nest allows a parasite to enter & exterminate the colony).

Remember in August, many moths lay their nests & general insecticide sprayed around the pines will reduce the nesting process.
