I imagine that will depend on exactly what is available in your community.
As an example, when we first bought, we had a little mini dish fitted to the side of the house which fed into the "modem" which sat in the living room connected by a wire (it went through the wall aligned with where the dish was outside).
Then, maybe in 2019 our community "got fibre" and so I was able to upgrade to fibre and all that seemed to involve was flicking a couple of switches (one in a communal area near where out postboxes were and one in my house in a unit contained in one of the bedrooms). This enabled the mini dish to be removed and the "modem" now simply requires a power socked to provide the wifi all over the house.
I also installed a Wifi booster for upstairs although I'm considering upgrading that to a mesh network to get better performance and coverage.
So in my scenario - there has never been a dongle (which is more for remote wifi rather than home I thought?) and with the latest fibre no obvious wires.
