Hello

Sat at Alicante airport after just hiring a car from firefly again. Ok,I can hear the murmuring already(bigger fool me). We last hired from them the same time last year and had such a cufuffle with them regarding already existing damage, which we eventually won out on.

Well, this time after pointing out 4 pieces of damage that we're on our previously unmarked hire we have sent our photos off to them, let's see what happens...but I'm sorry I've digressed..my real rant is about the wonderful "roadside assistance" clause.this states we are responsible for any breakdown that needs a tow in and we have to use their company and no one else. Well I'm not sure if our excess policy would cover this, but surely if their car breaks down it's not my fault all?

Anyway just thought I'd post, may be buying a car soon at this rate

Hi Weedster

No, you are not a fool, most of us have been there and got the t shirt.

It's all about how long you are prepared to put up with with the airport operators spoiling your stay.

The first thing you could do is use a reliable off airport operator such as Magnum or Lara cars who meet you at the airport with your car and you only pay what they originally quoted you with no hard sell on any extras.

Secondly, as you have already alluded to, buy your own car, it took me a long time to get around to it but I wouldn't have it any other way now, from landing at the airport to driving out in our own car is app 30 mins, 45 if busy.

You just don't need the stress and hassle of the airport renters.

Ken

My car hire excess insurance  (with Questor) covers up to £750 for towing, with luck yours may do the same. I do not use this in Spain as I keep a car there. I never even thought to check this as like you I assumed car hire breakdowns are the responsibility of the company, though nothing surprises me with car hire in Spain!

Would suggest you book local Costa companies, not the big ones which seem to have commission based employees out for as much as possible so many horror stories

Rgds,

Thanks for this. Just checked my policy with carhireexcess.com and it definitely states covered for towing costs,so no need to worry. It was probably more of the hard sell attitude that got me at the airport desk.

That's good news.

If you do want to continue hiring I would go with the advice given by others and try companies such Lara, Magnum or Coys care hire, slightly more possibly but no hassle.
