Resident driving in Spain on U.K. liscence

My son is one of those who due to timing was unable to exchange his license and so is now unable to drive legally. Is this a blanket ban? Can he for example drive my Spanish car ( I am not a resident) or can he drive a hire car?
If your son is a legal resident in Spain and his UK licence is expired it will then be invalid for any event.

Hi Steve. He is a legal resident but has a legal unexpired U.K. license.

Until the rules change to drive any vehicle legally in Spain he will have to take the Spanish driving test.

As a legal resident his driving licence becomes invalid after 6 months and he will need to take a Spanish driving test.
