Hi, we've had our house for 5-6 years now. For the first time we're having mould problems. I should say we're normally only over in the summer with the odd week other times, so it's empty a lot of the time.

Last year we came over just after the floods. There was some pretty bad mould in the downstairs of the house (on the walls and on the sofa). We just put it down to the dampness. Bleached and repainted.

This time someone has visited and downstairs is fine but upstairs has mould on the walls. The upstairs is a seperate entrance and was fine till now. Just seems very odd that we've not had this issue before.

Has anyone else come across this? Is there special mould resistant paint I can use to prevent this?

As I'm sure you're aware, mould is very common in Spain, and it's not helped in your case by the property being unoccupied and presumably therefore not ventilated. Downstairs is understandable post floods, with rising damp enabled by the lack of a damp-proof course.

Upstairs is a bit more unusual, but definitely indicates inadequate ventilation, although in this case it's more likely to be due to condensation.

Because it's so common, there are loads of paints designed to tackle it.

I give some examples re anti-condensation in my paints guide:

To give you some examples of what's available for mould, look at:

Thanks Jim - how could I not know there was a "Jims Guide" !

Very helpful thanks. I didn't know mould was an issue, as I said we've had the house 6 years now and this is the first time we've experienced it.

What was really bothering me was that last time we caught awful coughs, mine turned into a stay in hospital with pneumonia. Don't know if it's fair to blame the mould as everyone we know wherever in the world seems to have caught it!

The reason you didn't know there was a Jim's Guide is because Alex seems to hide them about 20 pages further down the side. They deserve a place at the top.
