Hi all.Our dog died a few years ago in Uk. We are hoping now we’re retired to get another one but the problem is we travel back to the Uk for x amount of months a year.Kennels are not an option as obviously to expensive and would be cruel to leave there for 3 months possibly. So what do other people do?

Here is my opinion of bringing a Dog to Torrevieja , I have a well behave Jack Russell, I have a 28 hour Ferry crossing from Ireland, 10 hour drive to Torrevieja, Stressful for me,
Then take Dog into consideration, not many Pet friendly Cabin on Car ferry then it Dog Kennels extra costs.
My Dog did not adapt as I has hoped to life in Spain, Dog is not suited to Apartment life,
Cannot leave Dog on Soluriam when strong Sun is out, My social life was restricted a bit due Dog uncomfortable in Apartment,
My Dog use to a large Back green Garden with a few sheds,The heat is an issue for her, so the moral of my story is if I wish to return next winter I got a decision to make do I keep Dog or Do I want winter in Torrevieja, The stress on Dog face tells it own story

Hi,
One option to look at may be to foster one of the many rescue dogs whilst you're here. If you're upfront about your situation it may suit a shelters requirements.

Hi well yes that would be ok but really want our own dog and how cruel really to give the dog a taste of home life and the leave it again.Maybe the solution would be to find someone in same position and look after each others but finding people is the problem
As far as I can see, you have 2 options only.
1. Be prepared to drive to and from UK (?) to Spain with your dog every time
or
2 Sorry, but you have to go without a dog till your move is permanent.
Hope you can manage option 1.
Good luck
Adrian

I know you find Adrian’s reply unhelpful, but it is coldly factual and true in principle.
Many dogs do not cope that well with unaccustomed heat here, as well as the fact that it’s not a good idea to walk them other than early morning or later in the evening due to the heat on unprotected paws.
The kennel/cattery which we used in uk frequently had long stay canine residents, for a variety of reasons, so it is a possibility. Or perhaps you could ask a friend who may already have a dog to look after it in their home during their absence, for an agreed emolument? Or there are animal foster homes, who may be prepared to look after it for you during your absence?

Not much point in asking for opinions if you get a response that might be something you are unwilling to hear, but it a hard fact ,
My wee dig does not cope well with heat Torrevieja had in March so how would Dog cope in July August mad heat, Yes I have serious thinking to do about bring my Dog to Torrevieja later in year

Well I’ve obviously got the wrong impression about this forum. I thought the idea was for people to give helpful suggestions of how to solve the problem not just throw in their random opinions about my dog ownership. My lovely girl was a rescue from here and obviously I would never take her out in the heat of the day but this was not the subject in question

You may have an option of dog sitters, neighbours that are willing to help and local dog walkers might have some good information on who to use.
Like the UK, there are paid dog walkers that are likely good sources of information. Ask about, there may just be a person wanting some pet company that would suit both parties down to the ground. The key would be to do it as early as possible so you can have something in place in good time. Good luck.
