Hey everyone,

I am bringing my pet dog (for the first time) to Albir/Altea spain next week, to visit family. I am told by our vets here that before I bring her home she must be seen by a local vet in spain. I wondered if anyone knows of/ can recommend a good local vets (preferably speaks good English as unfortunately my Spanish is poor at best) thank you in advance, Kirstie Xx

Hi Kirstie,

You don't say how long you're staying here?  We have a potentially fatal disease in Spain, called Leishmaniasis, carried by the Sandfly Mosquito, which affects dogs and some other animals.  So, as well as any mandatory requirement there may be to have your dog seen by a Spanish vet before you return home, I'd recommend you see a vet in the UK before you come to Spain to ensure your dog is up to date with its rabies jabs and to take advice on Leish'.  The available vaccine for Leish' is considered only 80% effective, but combined with a suitable collar, such as Seresto (which is waterproof and lasts 7-8 months) is currently the best protection you can provide for your woof.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hey Kim,

Thank you so much for your message, massively helpful. On this occasion we are only out for a week, as of next month however she will probably stay for most of the summer.

She is fully up to date with rabies injection. Is the collar you mentioned a tick collar? If so I have her one of these.

I will most certainly seek advice from our vet here in regards to the other thing you mentioned prior to coming out.

You couldn’t recommend a local vet in Albir could you? Preferably one that speaks good English. I would like a local one as over summer we come and go regularly

Thank you so much for your help

Kirstie Xx
