Hello Stephen, the main stumbling block could be the fallout from Brexit after which you may be limited to 90 days stay out of every 180. The least that is going to happen is that your passport will be registered at every entry and exit point to the Schengen area so overstaying will have consequences.
Will you be caring for any of your family in Spain as this could help in certain circumstances?

Please consider  insurance as the EHIC will be replaced, with what, we don't know.

After 90 days you will need to apply for Residency which entails proving you are financially independent and after 6 months you will automatically become tax resident in Spain.
