If they're working, then they don't need servicing.

All you need to do is remove the filters occasionally and clean them.

what rubbish , all units need serving at least twice a year , if not they may stop when you need them most and they can cause increased electricity use , and heavy repair bills ,when they do break down , no different from a car they need service , by the way I have been an engineer for 40 years , will be in spain from , next week would be interested in any part time work

Depends on the age of the units and if you smoke.

If you smoke, then they should be done annually, if not and you live here permanently, once every 2-3 years. If you only use it as a holiday home then probably every 5-6  years. You can't really get legionnaires disease from these type of units.

Filters only block about 60% of pollutants reaching the radiator type fins behind them.

It's clearing these fins to ensure the best airflow through the unit.

The main thing you want to avoid is the hamster type fan wheel getting clogged which is after the fins.

Cleaning this indoor fan is very messy and sometimes involves dismantling parts of the unit.

There was a company called Debonair(Nick) that operated in your area. I'm sorry but I don't have any contact details and it was a while ago.

I have to disagree in areas were there is a lot of dust and heavy road users the out side condenser is just as important as inside ,it is found shops or offices , housing near main roads will need constant cleaning of filters and condensers , if a condenser is blocked it not only harms the operation but also increases the cost of running , inside units are skin of people and dust , which spain has a lot off , it also blocks drains and causes the unit to go out on fault sensors , so like a car , you could run for years or it will breakdown if not properly serviced

I have to disagree with the above three posts, based purely on experience. My wife and I both smoke, plus we have a log fire, and we live in an agricultural area where there is frequently dust from ploughing the fields or harvesting the crops.

We've had two of our aircon units for fourteen years, one for five years, and all I've had to do is clean the filters. I do a visual examination when I've taken the filters out and, apart from some discoloration, there has never been any build-up of anything that has prompted me to take further action.

I'm willing to concede that some makes may suffer problems but, as I said, our units (all Panasonic) have never needed servicing.

Bottom line - remove the filters for cleaning periodically, and have a look inside to see if further attention is needed.

Whatever works for you Jim is fine. However, manufacturers including Panasonic recommend regular servicing from annually to biannually to chemical clean the coils. The main benefit being efficiency.

Point taken and thanks. I've never noticed any reduction in efficiency, but suppose that if that happened gradually then I might have missed it.

well experience tells me that the area you live in plays a big part , if your in country and air is clean then they work better but town and city are really different ,as for the suppliers they say clean all parts twice a year , doesn,t matter who,s make , the installation of units is very important , but we know most people do not service there car , so its about the same with refrigeration and airconditioning
