Is it worth having electricity installed

Hi there, first post as thinking of buying in Spain. The property we are looking at currently doesn't have electricity as it is very rural, but has an informal arrangement with next door to run an extension lead into the property and pay as required. There are then multiple extension leads to power the lights, etc.

My question is should we look to get electricity installed, how much is this usually and would we then need to get someone to install wiring and circuits or could this done by us? Or is the cost prohibitive and could just keep the same arrangement? Not we are not renting out, looking for a lock up and leave to be used by us only. Many thanks in advance Stephen

Hi Stephen   and welcome to the forum. The situation you describe does not appear to be a good one .It portrays a very ad hoc Electrical installation,  at best it sounds it could turn out to be an inconvenient set up, especially if the person in the neighbouring property, or any future owner of said property, decided to terminate the agreement for your Ele trinity supply . At worse it could be a very dangerous set up ,potentially resulting in Electrical Shock ,fire, or burns.

The best advice is to arrange for a fully qualified Electrician to take a look and go from there in line with his, or her, reccomendations

Good Luck ! . It would be interesting to know the final outcome.

Yes of course, how does this compare price wise to getting electricity connected? Thinking of solar power rather than generator...

Highly dangerous, and probably illegal, to have a number of extension leads plugged in to one another  - high risk of overheating and fire risk. When you apply for insurance you will need to declare this, as any claims further down the line due to fire damage would be invalidated

If your neighbour is on mains already then it shouldn't take too much to get it supplied legally to the property you are looking at so contact Iberdrola for a quote. Of course this will depend on whether the property has a Habitacion Certificate and many country properties don't have this as they were built illegally.
We were quoted ballpark €14,000 for a solar system capable of running a central heating system on top of the usual requirements.
I don't think country properties are suitable for lock up and leave personally as damp will become a major issue and any land you have will need regular work.
