Having rented when we first moved here I wholeheartedly agree with Cheryl, also like she said make sure you employ your own gestor not the one from the Estate Agents.

Hope your move goes smoothly when you eventually come over :-)

Thanks Madcatwoman! good to hear

Best wishes, Chris

In addition to the above beware dogs in neighbouring houses, it can be a problem given some owners leave them out all day to bark. It seems some in Spain like a dog to act as a burglar alarm.

We are dog owners and are normally fairly defensive when people criticise owners but there is often a different way of thinking here, be careful and know your neighbours before you part with any money :)...

...

Other than that do a proper budget projection and think about a car given public transport is patchy in many areas.

What is it they say? Spain has about the highest dog per household rate but also one of the worst places when it comes to animal cruelty and neglect 🙁   I think my very spoiled Westie has no idea how lucky the little brighter is ;)

Hi,we settled in benijofar last year, lovely place, you have the best of both worlds, you can fully immerse yourselves in the Spanish community and ex pat environment. We go to see benijofar football team costs 2 euros, drink coffee and eat tapas or walk to either benemar or quasada if you want international food. Bus to torrevieja for 1.85 for the beach in summer or bike to guadamar for the beach. You will always find a friendly smile from either ex pat's or Spanish.Good luck in your search.

Ah thank you eileen36 - good to hear that you've settled there, it sounds just perfect.

Hello Steve

Thanks for your response.

I will have an Irish passport (ie EU passport) by then and my husband is going through the process but his will take much longer so will be on a British passport.

We've engaged an Immigration lawyer who tells us there is a way for Carl (husband) to move, I think there are more costs involved.  We'll no doubt find out in due course.

Thanks for getting in touch.

Kind regards, Chris

Hi. I am sure you are aware of this already……but under EU rules, your husband can move to both live & work in Spain with you now/immediately (or when suits you both!) as you already have an an EU passport. Non-EU spouses/common law (need to show additional proof if common-law) have the same rights as their EU spouse/common law. Your husband just has to apply for the same EU card (in all EU states) within 3 months of arriving. My husband & I (he has Irish/EU passport) will be doing the same in 2023!

Hi Sean Douglas- well, wow, no we didn't know this.

In fact, during our initial conversation with the Lawyer he implied differently! So that's really good to know, thank you so much, and for the link, we will investigate further.

Where in Ireland are you? My parents & Carl's Grandfather were from Mayo where my sister now lives.

Best wishes, Chris

Glad I posted! The EU link I posted is really useful-plus takes you to the Spanish site once you put in the specific country you are moving too. We are actually in Glasgow, Scotland. My husband has applied for Irish Citizenship (through grand-parents) so we can move to Spain without going through the British/non-EU process drama! Still awaiting that going through; applied Feb 2020 but department been closed since March 2020 & only re-opened Nov 2021! So fingers crossed will hopefully be through by the time we move over summer 2023. Good luck & all the best!

yes, thanks, really useful.

Good luck with the passport, I know they've had a bit of a backlog there due to covid and rush on Irish passports but 2023 is plenty of time I would have thought.

I'll have a look at the link tomorrow.  Your info is much appreciated.
