That's the alarm company's fault.  The activation should be to a Central monitoring station, they should then do their internal check to see it's not a false activation then call the police to attend the premises where the activation has occurred. The days of contacting the police directly is long gone.

Agree!
I ditched Alarma Direct a few years ago because of their persistent failures. I had regular problems with their alarms setting off spurious alarms. They never sent anyone out to check that they were just alarm faults and not burglars and despite them having the number of my nominated contact in Spain, they continued to phone me in the UK at 2.30 in the morning to tell me my alarm was going off. Not the service I was paying through the nose for.

We’re with Verisure, if the alarm is activated there are cameras inside and out with which they can tell if it’s an actual incident or say the cat setting it off. If they think it’s suspicious they send out a man in a van to check the property, he then calls the police if necessary.

The only downside to the system is that it doesn’t make a sound if tripped. Our alarm in the uk made a beeping sound as soon as you entered the house, then you had so long to deactivate. So you enter the house, forget the alarm as there’s no sound. Alarm goes off, panic, then deactivate, now get a call from them to say the alarms been activated. Just a minor problem in the scheme of things!

Sorry, I don't agree with your generalisation about British police. In December 2022 I was in the UK when my neighbour was burgled. I dashed to help, to find the police were there, had already searched the house and tracked the burglar on CCTV to the town. A speedy and positive response. The victim support follow-up was excellent also. Just an example of the positives of the Police.

There are a number of alarm companies that offer CCTV but people should be aware that you do not get LIVE footage from these systems. They are normally not able to get video on demand.

There are a number of DIY CCTV kits that are super easy to set up and install and I personally recommend Amazon Blink because when set up correctly they have NO monthly subscription fees, they offer alerts to your mobile phones and give you live feeds on demand. They are also very reasonable when purchased in any of the many Amazon sales (No, I do not work for Amazon!)

My caveat to any of the above is that you need a constant Internet connection. I also recommend a UPS (approx 100€) to keep the router and any security system active in the event of a power failure!

All that said, it is never nice to hear of a break in, these events can be devastating and life changing in the sense that people may choose to sell up and go after the event. 

The OP is clearly a very good neighbour, as most neighbours are, and thank you for bringing the issue to the attention of the forum and the neighbourhood. 

I know where you are (I came to see you about your roof and hope you have progressed your reform!) and you are correct it is difficult to find you home.

I hope your neighbour manages to make some progress and recover from this.
