A mate has a 2 bed apt holiday home, maybe used 6 weeks of the year.

He brings in an Electrician to eradicate trips.

The Electrician is amazed to be told that my mate is still on a 2.3kwh tariff with Iberdrola?? The Electrician speaks to him about a 5.5kwh tariff.

He upgrades the fuses and issues the bolletin.

Questions,

Is it part of the process that one of these bolletin copies is sent to Iberdrola?

And will my mates tariff be changed to the 5.5 tariff ?

I think that the above is the scenario, my mate thinks his tariff will remain at 2.3kwh ' cos that's what it says on his account.

Who is right ?

Hi Kenbo,

I'd be surprised if your friend needs 5.5kw for a 2 bed apartment - we have 5.75kw for a 3-bed, 3-bath house with private pool, running entirely on electricity, and have no problems.

In any event, the point of the electrician checking the electrics and issuing a new boletin is to certify to Iberdrola that the electrical system is suitable for upgrade.  If your friend agrees to this, his standing charge will increase in line with the greater 'potencia' he will be able to draw from the system.

The alternative would be to ask the electrician to check whether there is a problem with one of the electrical appliances that may be the cause of the tripping - but perhaps the electrician has already done so and that is why he's recommending increasing the potencia?

I think your friend needs to be clear about what the electrician is recommending, as an increase in 'potencia' will result in an increase in the cost of his bills.

Kind regards,

Kim

Thanks Kim

Yes I am sure he doesn't need 5.5, mine in 3.3 for similar apt with no problems.

So actually you are saying that the process of moving to a higher potencia is not automatic following the issue of the bolletin?

My take on it was as the Electrician had spoke about the 5.5 he would recommend that on the bolletin but you are saying that my friend would have to request any increase ?

Does the bolletin report not go to Iberdrola?

Hi Ray,

I don't think 5.5kw is the highest domestic rating, as we already have 5.75kw, and when we first moved here and had a problem with tripping, I used Iberdrola's online calculator to ensure we had the correct potencia - it recommended 10.5kw!  Thankfully, after some brilliant advice from Pete Knight (EDIT: prior to Jim writing his equally brilliant guides! 😘), my husband identified that our water heater was failing and once he'd swapped it out for a new one, the problem was solved.  Hence my suggestion that Kenbo and his friend ensure they understand what the electrician is proposing and that all options have been investigated.  If it is a supply problem, I agree that 3.3kw should be ample for a 2-bed apartment.

Kind regards,

Kim

Thankyou very much to you all for your input.

It appears that I was wrong in that case as all that the bolletin says in this case is 'you now have a certificate to prove that you can have a 5.5kwh tarriff should you wish to do so ' if he would rather stay on 2.3 then so be it ??

Happy to admit when I am wrong lol
