Paul, I think the large stores in Valencia can now open a maximum number of a combination of Sundays and Bank Holidays of a total of  40 days per year .  Apparently following the second Sunday of January they close on these days until about May or June , with a resuming of Sunday opening for a short period late March to early April so as to maximize their allowance during busier months of the year .

The next time the shops are open Sundays will be 14th April, then 21st and 28th April. Closed then until 16th June, when everything is open again on Sundays until end of year.

Small shops like Quick save in Los Dolses are open selling papers and groceries every Sunday.

Bit like the UK used to be when nothing was open on Sundays.

However the Spanish being pragmatic any restaurant that is normally open on Sundays will still be open.
