No doubt many people will have seen Ryanair's latest attempt at bleeding more money from their customers with their new luggage policy.

However, in reality this is all smoke and mirrors. All that is changing is that the cabin sized bag will be taken from the passenger and placed in the hold. Ryanair's claim that passengers will have to pay for priority boarding to travel with two bags is misleading. Anyone who has travelled with Ryanair over the past year or so will already  have experienced this happening with ground crew tagging approximately 40 bags which were then taken from the passenger as they boarded the flight.

What has prompted all of this? Well Ryanair's attempts at charging exorbitant fees for hold luggage failed miserably with many travellers purchasing cabin bags having realised that it was unnecessary to lug large suitcases full of clothes on holiday, most of which weren't even worn. We find that we can kit a child out in Primark in the Boulevard cheaper than paying for a suitcase with Ryanair.

The problem for Ryanair is that passengers are carrying more cabin bags than there are overhead lockers hence their latest attempt at squeezing more money from their customers. But don't be taken in by this. Passengers are still allowed two bags, the cabin size and an additional handbag/laptop/ dutyfree bag. The only difference is that the cabin size bag will be put into the hold as you are boarding the aircraft. So, it is important that anything you need on the flight and upon arrival needs to be put into the smaller carry on bag. This includes PASSPORTS, as these are examined before you will get your case back, medication, reading glasses etc. So play them at their own game and don't be mugged again by Ryanair.

I travelled with Ryanair on Tuesday.  I paid an extra 5 euros for priority boarding and flew from east midlands to Murcia for 27 euro. Dont think that broke the bank.  Lots of people didnt bother and had their large hand luggage put in the hold for free.  It wasnt a problem.  When we got off the aircraft it was really quick as most people hadnt got luggage to take.  It worked very well in my opinion

Sorry also meant to say people didnt have to show their passports to get their cases back.  They just went the carousel with the other luggage.  They were all tagged

Glad to hear it. But, if travelling as a couple, then Ryanair just added another €10 to their profits for nothing. As regards passports, I didn’t say that you had to show it to retrieve your bag but simply that, in Alicante you pass through passport control before you can retrieve your bag.

I agree that their prices are hard to beat out of season. But,taking last August as an example, we paid £254 per person, including having to purchase seats to have our two grandchildren sit with us. So I'm under no illusion that Ryanair's prices are reflective of what you paid last week. To reiterate, my initial point was that it is not compulsory for passengers to purchase priority boarding to take two bags on the flight. It would be interesting to know what would happen if everyone did pay for priority boarding as this would put us back to square one with insufficient overhead lockers to facilitate everyone.

I agree with you.  We all said everyone will purchase priority boarding and then Ryanair will have the same problem.  Thats when everyone needs to remember that is why they paid for priority boarding and refuse to have their bags put in the hold.

If people aren’t happy with Ryanair’s prices use another airline. Twelve flights with them in last twelve months and no complaints

Sometimes people can't see the woods for the trees. Surely a more important issue needs addressed here. Under aviation law, there are items which are prohibited from being carried in an aircraft's hold. These include gas cigarette lighters, e-cigarettes, gas curling tongs, lithium-ion powered devices such as laptops, iPads, mobile phones and digital cameras. As these items can be taken through airport security and no further luggage examination takes place, what is to prevent passengers bags containing these prohibited items from being placed in the hold? Just another accident waiting to happen?
