Viewed a third floor apartment, and noticed a rat dropping in covered outside utility area behind kitchen. Definitely rat dropping as too large for mouse dropping. Was surprised to see rat dropping so high up. Did notice a lot of household waste debris spread around communal bin area outside the urbanisation. Really like the apartment, but the rat dropping and rubbish around bins has spooked me. Did mention rat dropping to the estate agent at time of viewing but he didn’t really seem interested in the dropping and didn’t even come to investigate what I had found. Am I overreacting? Terrified of vermin. Last thing I want to buy is a third floor apartment with resident rat!

Could be like the UB40 song ’Rat in mi Kitchen’

Hello

Simple answer for me is to move on & find another  location and apartment, there are 100's to choose from. I see no point in buying anything/anywhere that has problems from the start!

Cheers

Bit disappointing for you especially as you like the apartment. Unfortunately rats can climb walls etc., and may even be in living in the wall cavities. If the estate agent didn't respond to your rodent query I think I would give the complex a wide birth!

Without putting you of completely you may find the contents of these links interesting:

Hi,

I've never seen any rats in the 7 years I have lived in Spain (well not the 4 legged variety). I thought this was down to the number of feral cats that roam around!

A lot of areas in Orihuela Costa have untidy bins areas, a historical problem, though on recent trips I would say that from what I could see it is improving. Maybe the council have finally signed a maintenance contract for the refuse collection lorries!

If you are seriously interested in the apartment seek out the president and ask about any issues. Tactfully mention what you have seen and see if this is a known problem.

Rgds,

Aitch.

Certainly uncontained or poorly managed rubbish areas are not good and can attract vermin but yes, I think you probably are overreacting.

Rats are everywhere and because you don't often or ever see them doesn't mean a thing.

A rat dropping in an outside open are is absolutely nothing to be overly worried about.

It was in a covered porch type utility area 3 floors up, attached to actual kitchen of the apartment. So not an outside rat dropping.

This wasn’t a ground floor property.

Some rat pack facts:

There are an estimated 7 billion rats in the world, nearly 1 rat for every human. (so if never seen one, done well)

The brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) Brown rats can be found throughout the Iberian peninsular including coastal regions but there is no evidence of any interbreeding or hybridization between the two species where their distribution overlaps. Habitat: Brown rats are found throughout much of Spain & are good climbers..

Under the new law, rats will enjoy protection from cruelty on the basis that they are vertebrates. Killing one could land you anywhere between six and 18 months in jail – although prison sentences of under two years for first offenders are usually suspended in Spain.Sep 23, 2023

Hi,

I've never seen a rat in my 10 years of living in Spain but if you've seen evidence of rats being present then I'd sooner move on to view other properties, better safe than sorry.
