Looking for information from people who have sadly had to deal with the death of a loved one and genuine experiences not from sales people.

Is it essential to have a prepaid funeral plan? If so what company did you use and how was their service.

Arranging a funeral without a funeral plan, how was your experience and who did you use.

My husband has been very unwell and we’re getting older and this is playing on my mind as we have no experience in Spain. I would really appreciate hearing the experiences of people who have had to deal with the death of a loved one.

Many thanks

Funeral plans…

I researched these here in Spain extensively last year and decided against going with Avalon and Golden Leaves because they were so expensive, coming in at €4000 for their cheapest plan, a simple cremation, plus Avalon were very pushy in their sales approach.

I visited my local crematorium to find that paying them direct for a cremation at the was costing €4200 at that time and would clearly increase annually.

I checked out various Spanish and British products with other companies and eventually found Funeral Plans Europe, and their director, Moira Carmenate, who was a previous European Director for Avalon.

I thoroughly recommend them and her. We bought the Palmerita Plan at €2495, which provides the same simple cremation as that with Avalon and Golden Leaves.

Please mention my name if you contact them.

Cheers for now

Hi Yvonne,

We have a joint plan with Avalon, which cost €4,200 when we bought it 5 years ago.  We chose Avalon because my in-laws had plans with them and the service was excellent.  Friends have a plan through their bank, but this is an insurance, rather than a pre-paid plan, so there are conditions attached.  For example, they didn't have full cover until they'd paid for the first year; if they had passed away during the first year, they (or their estate) would have had to pay any shortfall for the funeral.

I think it really comes down to how much support you or your husband are likely to need in the event of the other´s death.  Personally, I would go direct to the crematorium:

but my husband will need his hand held through the process if I go first, hence why we went for a plan.  You can certainly get them cheaper than Avalon (or Golden Leaves), just make sure you know what it covers.

Kind regards,

Kim
